The Biggest New Thing At Troon North Hasn't Opened Yet

"Scottsdale Golf Retreat at Troon North will be an iconic property that fills a void in the North Scottsdale market," developer Mike Anderson said when the project was announced in October of 2025. Ten months later, the void is still there. Pull up the retreat's own booking site today and the "Now accepting reservations for Grand Opening" banner is carrying more weight than it should have to: the 26-suite property that press releases pegged for an "early 2026" opening is now taking its first arrivals in October.

If you live in Troon North, this isn't really a hotel story. The clubhouse end of the neighborhood has stayed busy all year no matter when Anderson's suites open their doors. What's actually useful to understand is the daylight between what got announced and what showed up on the ground, because that gap is the exact window you're living in right now, and it explains why this fall around the Monument and Pinnacle courses is going to feel different from this summer.

What Already Changed At The Clubhouse

While the Retreat sat under construction, the resort next door didn't wait around. Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North opened Desert Orchard, a new café built around Sonoran Desert ingredients, in early January. Days later the resort named a new general manager, Jerome Arribas, and by February it had a new executive chef, Gregory James, tasked with rebuilding the whole food and beverage program around that same regional idea rather than a generic resort menu. By June, the resort's restaurant Proof had relaunched under what the property is calling a new era.

None of that required a ribbon cutting or a construction fence. It's the kind of change that shows up as a different name on a reservation app and a different chef's signature on the menu, the sort of thing a resident notices only if they happen to book a table. If you haven't been to Proof or Desert Orchard since earlier this year, you're not eating the same menu you remember.

The Retreat That Still Isn't Here

The project everyone was told to expect is a smaller build than it sounds. Scottsdale Golf Retreat sits on a 2.7-acre parcel just west of the Troon North clubhouse, developed by the Scottsdale-based MBA Development Partners. It's eight low buildings holding 26 total suites: 20 four-bedroom units around 1,615 square feet and six two-bedroom units around 700 square feet, aimed squarely at golf groups rather than families or couples looking for a resort weekend. The amenity list is a 650-square-foot pool, a spa, an outdoor kitchen, fire features, and a social clubhouse the property calls The Hangout. Notably, it isn't bringing its own restaurant. Guests will eat at Troon North's existing Dynamite Grille, the same grill overlooking the 18th hole of the Pinnacle course that's been feeding golfers and locals for years.

The original announcement in October 2025 called this a project "currently under construction" and "projected to open in early 2026." Whatever early 2026 was supposed to mean, it didn't happen. The retreat's own site now shows a live 360-day booking window with arrivals starting in October, which is at least half a year past whatever "early" was supposed to cover, and closer to nine months if the developer meant the start of the year.

The Months Nobody Put In A Press Release

Here's the part that actually matters if you live here rather than just visit. That construction-to-opening gap wasn't announced anywhere, but it created something real: a preview season. Right now, Troon North has all of the upgraded dining (new chef, new café, relaunched steakhouse) without any of the guest volume the Retreat's 26 suites are eventually going to add. Once October arrival dates start filling, a chunk of that new demand is going to route straight through Dynamite Grille and onto tee sheets at Monument and Pinnacle, since the property was built to lean on existing Troon North infrastructure instead of adding its own.

That means the quieter version of this neighborhood, reworked kitchens and all, has a shelf life. Whether you golf or just like to eat somewhere that isn't packed, the next couple of months are the version of Troon North you get before a purpose-built stay-and-play crowd starts showing up in numbers. One Date Worth Keeping

There's also a specific reason to have Troon North Golf Club on your calendar this December that has nothing to do with the Retreat. Troon, the management company headquartered in Scottsdale, relaunched its amateur tournament series this year as the Access Challenge, with regional qualifying running from June through August at courses across Arizona, California, Florida and Texas. One of those Arizona qualifiers ran right here in Scottsdale at Kierland Golf Club on July 19. The whole series funnels toward a single finish: the Access Championship, scheduled for Saturday, December 12, 2026, at Troon North Golf Club.

You don't need to have played in a qualifier to watch the finals land at a course a short drive, or in some sub-communities a short walk, from your front door. It's a concrete date, sponsored by Callaway Golf with live scoring through Golf Genius, and it's the kind of thing that's easy to miss unless someone tells you it's happening in your own backyard.

What This Actually Adds Up To

None of these three threads (the resort's reworked kitchens, the retreat's slipped timeline, the tournament date) are separate stories. They're the same story from three angles: Troon North is being built out and reprogrammed faster than any single announcement lets on, and most of the change so far has happened quietly, one appointment or one soft-launch at a time, while the one loud announcement from last October still hasn't fully arrived. The neighborhood you're in right now, this August, is genuinely a different one than the neighborhood you'll be in come November, and almost none of that difference showed up as a headline.
